East Timor and Australian scientists launch remote diagnostic links

East Timorese scientists can now beam live images of exotic pests to Australia, to try and prevent the outbreak of disease.

Remote diagnostic technology has been set up in Dili as part of a three year project led by the Department of Resources in Australia's Northern Territory.

The Department's Peter Stephens says previously diseases could become rampant on farms, while scientists waited for analysis. "o it means that plant health scientists over there can share live video feeds of their specimens with international experts around the world,"he said.

MOGADISHU, May 1 (Reuters) - Two explosions at a mosque in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Saturday killed 39 worshippers, wounded scores more and hurt a senior member of the al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebels.

It was the second attack this week on a mosque in Bakara Market, an area of Mogadishu dominated by members of the country's two main rebel groups, al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam.

Le bilan de l'attaque d'une coalition des Mai Mai du colonel Cheka et des rebelles hutu rwandais contre la cité minière de Mubi, à 36 kilomètres au nord de Walikale centre est revu à la hausse. Le nombre de morts est passé à cinq. Selon des habitants sur place, 3 personnes parmi les blessés ont succombé à leurs blessures. Niger junta chops 2010 budget to reflect frozen aid

NIAMEY, May 1 (Reuters) - Niger's military-led government said on Saturday it had cut the 2010 budget by more than 13 percent due to the suspension of development aid under the previous government.

The lower spending projection in the impoverished West African nation comes at a time when a growing food crisis is threatening millions across the dry Sahel region.

NATO checks report of Afghan civilian deaths

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 1 (Reuters) - NATO said on Saturday it was investigating whether shots fired by its troops in southern Afghanistan had killed two women and a child traveling in car.

A spokesman for the governor of Zabul province said the passengers were shot on Friday while driving toward a roadblock where a combined group of NATO and Afghan troops were trying to disable a roadside bomb.

China receives second batch of quake relief materials from Russia

CHENGDU, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The second batch of disaster relief materials donated by Russia to earthquake-hit Yushu area in northwest China Monday was delivered to Chengdu, capital of the southwestern province of Sichuan.

The 65.57-tonne relief materials were part of Russia's 1.3-million-U.S.-dollar aid to Yushu. The first batch of relief materials was delivered to China on April 25.

The Yushu earthquake in Qinghai Province on April 14, measured 7.1 degrees on the Richter scale, killed at least 2,200 people and left more than 100,000 homeless.

Six Burmese child beggars in Malaysia have been kept in an immigration detention camp for more than nine months as the Burmese embassy continues to deny them assistance.

The children, who range from 10 to 14 years old, were trafficked into Malaysia from Rangoon, Irrawaddy and Mandalay divisions last year. Kyaw Thaung, of the Burmese Nationals Association in Thailand, said financial assistance is needed for the children to travel back to Burma.

Five killed in DRCongo militia attack: army

KINSHASA - The Mai-Mai militia attacked a shopping centre in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo killing five civilians, the army said Saturday, adding that they pillaged shops and looted goods worth millions.

The attack took place late Friday at a shopping centre in Mubi, a village about 150 kilometres (93 miles) west of Goma, the main city in Nord-Kivu province, Colonel Bobo Kakudji, commander of the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) in Nord-Kivu told AFP.

"Their intention was to loot. There were five civilians killed, and 11 wounded including a FARDC captain,"

KATHMANDU, May 1 (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of supporters of Nepal's Maoist former rebels, demanding their comrades be readmitted to government, marched to Kathmandu on Saturday in a protest that could imperil a deal that ended a long civil war.
