The region of southern and eastern Africa is experiencing its worst drought in decades, courtesy of the El Niño phenomenon, affecting 40 million people across 25 countries. The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) in June 2016 launched an appeal for $2.4 billion to provide immediate assistance to 23 million people classified as extremely food-insecure; in the Horn of Africa, an estimated 12 million people need food assistance.

In Ethiopia alone, 5.6 million people face hunger, 300,000 children are at risk of malnutrition and more than nine million people cannot access safe drinking water, while 2.4 million farmers and herders cannot sustainably practise their livelihoods. The latest appeal sought $948 million for 2017.

A couple of months ago we set up a labs project that created Topics pages for disaster types (e.g. floods, storms, etc). We presented users with a prototype ‘Floods’ page and sought feedback on the content, design, layout and functionality. After receiving a great response from users and taking on board some of your suggestions, we are now integrating these hazard type pages into the ReliefWeb site.

Starting with Floods, Droughts, Earthquakes and Storms, these first versions of the hazard type Topic pages will be most useful to humanitarian responders and researchers looking for analysis of responses to, lessons learned from and preparedness recommendations for humanitarian intervention in particular natural hazard types.

Last month we launched the beta version of our new topics pages as mentioned in our previous blog post. We've had a great response from the Reliefweb user community and are pleased to learn that the content service based around thematic topics is both useful and relevant to your information needs. We would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent topics pages survey as well as everyone who provided valuable feedback through other channels.

One of the key pieces of feedback we received was that users requested similar theme based pages for disaster types. So today we are announcing our new ‘disaster type’ topics pages which are designed to let you research and monitor information about a particular disaster, for example floods, earthquakes, storms etc.
